Seagate or LaCie drive formatted for Mac on Windows

Seagate and LaCie (a Seagate brand) are common among Mac users, especially LaCie's rugged drives for photo and video work. Whether one works on Windows depends on how it is formatted now, not on the brand.

How they come from the factory

Seagate: "Newer Seagate and LaCie branded external drives come preformatted with the exFAT file system, which allows it to be used on both Mac and Windows without reformatting the drive. Some older drives are formatted specifically for PCs, some specifically for Macs" (Seagate knowledge base, checked October 30, 2026). The LaCie Mobile Drive and Rugged SSD Pro manuals say the same: the drive is "preformatted exFAT for compatibility with both Mac and Windows computers" (LaCie Mobile Drive, Rugged SSD Pro).

Why yours might not open on Windows

  • It was reformatted on a Mac. LaCie's manuals suggest the computer's native file system "to optimize file copy performance" if a drive is used with only one type of computer, and name HFS+ as the format for Time Machine. The Rugged SSD Pro manual: "Windows cannot natively read or write to HFS+ (journaled) volumes."
  • It is an older model sold formatted for Mac.
  • It is still exFAT but not mounting. Then it is not a Mac format problem: check the cable and Disk Management. Drive not showing up

Read a Mac-formatted Seagate or LaCie drive

Diskferry opens APFS and Mac OS Extended drives of any brand, read only. Click Find Mac drives, allow the Windows prompt, browse and preview for free, then copy what you need with verification.

Notes for photo and video drives

  • Folders with many thousands of files can take a while to list and copy. Copy to an NTFS or exFAT destination: FAT32 cannot hold files over 4 GB, which many video files are.
  • RAID volumes from multi-disk LaCie units are not supported; Diskferry reads single-disk APFS and HFS+ volumes.
  • If the drive was a Time Machine disk, see Time Machine on Windows.

Questions

Should I reformat my LaCie drive to exFAT?

Only after the files are safely copied off, and only if you need the drive on both a Mac and a PC. LaCie notes exFAT is "not a journaled file system" and is not recommended for Time Machine or File History.

Does Seagate have its own app for reading Mac drives on Windows?

The Seagate knowledge base page we checked explains how to reformat, which erases the drive. It mentions that some older drives came with "special utilities" for working on both systems, but names no reader for Mac formats on Windows.
